Wonder Woman

She brought her daughters to the doctor.
One was sick and miserable, sad face pout.
The younger, six or so, bright eyed smile
wearing her Wonder Woman dress.

It was still bright red and blue, stars white.
Yet, it was worn, wrinkled, weathered.
The cape had a tattered shaggy corner.
The hem seam pulled, thread dangling.

About the waiting room, another eyes watched
as she, quietly, defended with steps and twirls.
The mother, while cradling the eldest, smiled
like the dress, a bit worn, was strong.

As mothers do, she looked about the room
Checking if her youngest was a bother.
Proud and friendly eyes met her’s
saying she is fine. We all are fine.

An elderly woman grinned and winked,
and the mother could see beyond.
Every woman had a Wonder Woman outfit
beneath their exterior of today.

Yes, some are frayed and dented
from years of life and challenges.
Some with proud pink ribbons
or battered bracelets from a fight.

Motherhood and jobs and children
pulled many threads, torn seams.
Yet, proudly she wears the colors true,
head high and shoulders square.

From the door, the doctor came in.
A young women, twenties, was with.
She had on a Wonder Woman T
and a sad face holding tears.

A quirk of fate, created this circle stage
from young to old, fresh to wise.
In the spotlight the little girl stood.
She stepped to the young woman.

Brandishing her bracelet, she spoke,
“Touch yours to mine. Have my strength.”
Mother blinked at her daughter’s words.
Yet, the young woman, grinning, kneeled.

They touch wrists, bracelet to bracelet.
Little girl dabbed the tear of the other.
“Sisters in battle,” said the little Gal.
“Sisters in life,” said the other.

There was no flash or thunder about,
but a wave of energy did surge.
Rocking the souls of the women,
Blessing their essence with power.

All about smiled, knowing, the gift
brought by the little girl in red and blue.
Taller, they became, chin high and proud.
Their strength for life bold and renewed.

Drive

            the ball comes down court
            hands ready.
Pick sets.
            flash around, shoulder to shoulder
Post up.
            ball pops the hand
            to the net.
Drive!

            new opponent takes the court,
            smug cancer.
Pick sets.
            team rallies, shoulder to shoulder,
Post up.
            Compo, head up high,
            undefeated.
Drive.

            athletes across the conference
            wear pink.
Pick sets.
all the Jack Pine, shoulder to shoulder,
Post up
            a number 32
            with love.
Drive.

Give Me A B!

Be it out on a chilly night
    or in a bright gymnasium,
Dressed in his olive drab jacket,
    this door-gunner veteran
will stand to the crowd and yell,
“C’mon Bobcats! Let’s Get Excited!”
And with a pump of a fist,
“Give me a B!”

How many time has he stood?
How many time has he rallied?
Sometimes twice a game.
He’s called out when we were ahead
or during time out of a key play.
And, we have looked with hope
to our Bobcat Man to lead.
“Give me a B!”

Today, we proudly stand together
    with a salute to him.
We are dressed in green
    to emulate his Bold, Brash,
    Bravado of a Barbaric cheer.
We are the Bobcat Nation!
And with a fist held high, we yell,
"Give me a B!"

Tough Chick

My muscles are pool noodles.
    My ankle is swollen.
I have bruises and a floor burn.
    But I will play on;
        I am a tough chick.

The ball was alien.
    My hands were dead fish.
My head unclear with trash talk.
    But I will play on;
        I am a tough chick.

Like in movies and in history,
Like in this game and the others,
There are women who stood tall and said,
    I will play on;
        I am a tough chick.

So I will shake it off,
And I will face all doubts.
My ankle is taped.
Time to suck it up and go.
Pass me the ball and be ready!
    I will play on;
        I am a tough chick.

That Guy

He may be that guy
that’s there at every game
cheering loud, or might be cursing the ref.

He may be that guy
that with few words to say,
is gruff, or might be a lullaby.

He may be that guy
that is at work, long on time,
chasing providence, or might be a dream.

Yet, he is that guy
that is there when needed like a hero,
no cape, but just as bold,
ready to leap, outside brave,
strong face, sturdy and dependable,
"don’t mess with my kids.”

He is that guy,
a paradox of close and distant,
gentle but rugged,
unbreakable yet bending.

He is that guy
that takes on a complex role
for a simple man
of being a father, a dad.

Yeah,
he is that guy.

Silver Shield on Blue

One week into the job
The rookie pulls a boy from a car wreck.
He clings tightly onto the blue uniform
But he doesn’t cry.
He is safe in the arms of the officer.
The new blue smiles ignoring pain and says a prayer,
Michael and Jude, I am the protector,
The one who faces impossible tasks.
“I’m going to be a cop too,” said the boy.
Yeah, this is what I do.

Some years and many miles on the road
Icing a twisted knee from a failed pursuit.
The officer pulls off the uniform that reeks
From the rousted whino.
A call comes from a former classmate with news.
One from their number has fallen in the line of duty.
Michael and Jude, How can I protect
And face the tasks ahead without purpose?
Checking on your toddling child a siren echoes in the distance.
Yeah, stroking the little head, I can continue to do.

Partners have come and gone, cars have changed.
Knee surgery and temporary desk duty have added a few pounds,
Slowing the step and tightening the blue collar.
Ol’ Cap is hospitalized from stress on the heart.
Whiskey bites the throat
Its all been the same, nothing ever changes
Michael and Jude, I need some protection
and help with the job I do.
On the table , drawn in crayon, is a boxy car and officer in blue.
Yeah, that’s the trick, I can go on a few.

Its an odd bit a fate that has brought the circle round
Yesterday, a trouble teen said ‘thanks’ and gave a hug.
Today, at the academy, an unusual invite did bring.
A new officer gets inducted and acknowledged today.
The boy from the car.
He shakes your hand with strength the way you did back when.
You pass on a gift of Don Quixote with the inscription that read,
“Michael and Jude, To Serve and Protect
Is an impossible job to do.
Yet, Quixote did manage to joust a windmill.”
Yeah, you salute, silver shield on blue.
